Collapse in Toronto

Don't know if you heard the breaking news on CBC, regarding an incident in Toronto (my home town). Apparently,  there was a huge water main break just south of my building. A big chunk of Dundas collapsed taking down a bus and a couple of shops along the street, Luckily, they got everyone out, but what is really interesting is that the collapse revealed a network of old brick-lined tunnels...probably part of the city's original storm sewer system and just forgotten and built over during the last century. One of the city engineers said the network of tunnels was how the area got the name "junction". Go figure...we always thought it was because of the train tracks.

According to city workers, the extensive collapse was likely caused by a combination of the break and one or more of the old tunnels collapsing at the same time. You will be interested to know that when they got the water shut down and got down into the tunnel system to install emergency jacks to support the other tunnel roofs, they were amazed to find the remnants of some kind of weird community. One of the workers said it was really creepy and if anyone asked him it looked like a "zombie hangout...."

Anyway, make sure you listen to the CBC, I'm sure there will be a lot more news on this throughout the day.
