MORE BRAINS! A RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD -- The Documentary
When I was just seventeen, I saw The Return of the Living Dead in the theater. It galvanized my love for the undead, and changed my life. This was my first real exposure to the genre, and I have measured almost everything I have watched since, against it.
The Return of the Living Dead was John Russo’s follow up to the revered classic Night of the Living Dead. John Russo co-wrote and co-produced Night of the Living Dead with George Romero. After retaining the rights to use “Living Dead” in any follow up work, Russo wrote a novel called Return of the Living Dead. Both Russo and Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) were in line to direct the subsequent film, but it eventually went to Dan O’Bannon (who was riding high with the success of Alien).
But O’Bannon would only sign on if he could re-write the story and script– to make it very different from the “Romero movie.”
That’s how The Return of the the Living Dead was born. In this documentary, the creators have assembled the original cast and much of the crew to candidly discuss what was awesome about making this movie– and what was a true nightmare. Some of it is tongue in cheek, and some of it is laugh-out-loud absurd, to be honest. But this is the story of the creation of a classic, and well worth watching!
